Pushing the Boundaries: Beyond Technology Lies in thebeyond
A wave of innovation is set to crash over the UK tech scene, with Glasgow emerging as the epicentre. This news fares well with our two Scotland-based subsidiaries, Wideblue in West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow and Pivot A2E in Alba Convention Centre in Livingston. Not only will this partnership bring an even more talented workforce, the innovations and opportunities will be endless. Let’s dive into it, shall we?
This transformation is driven by a dynamic partnership between the UK Government, Glasgow City Council, and the innovative Smart Things Accelerator (STAC). This powerful collaboration aims to propel Glasgow into Europe’s premier hub for “smart things” and Internet of Things (IoT) development, and the ripple effects will undoubtedly be felt across the entire UK tech landscape.
In 2023, the UK ranked third globally among technology companies, only behind the US and China. We’ve also seen a massive spike in startups from the UK, producing 151 companies valued at over £800 million each. To say the UK is eager and well-prepared for this investment would be a massive understatement.
A Match Made in Tech Heaven: Introducing thebeyond
Imagine a bustling metropolis where streetlights adjust to pedestrian flow, waste bins communicate fullness levels, and energy grids optimise real-time consumption. This is the vision that underpins the Glasgow smart city initiative, and STAC serves as the crucial catalyst.
Founded in 2021, STAC has already nurtured a thriving ecosystem of tech startups, providing them with the resources and mentorship needed to flourish. Pivot International, Pivot A2E, and Wideblue have been proud sponsors of STAC since 2022. Together with the other sponsors, we’ve mentored and collaborated with some of the UK’s most innovative tech startups.
The UK Government and Glasgow City Council recognised STAC’s potential and pledged their support. A £2.5 million investment, including a £257,000 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, will birth “thebeyond” – a state-of-the-art, 250-desk facility in Glasgow’s Finnieston district. This will be the beating heart of the smart city revolution, a vibrant space where cutting-edge ideas can be tested, refined, and unleashed upon the world.
Beyond the Horizon: A Glimpse into the Future
The impact of this partnership extends beyond Glasgow’s city limits. The UK tech sector, as a whole, stands to benefit from this collaborative spirit. Here’s a glimpse into what we believe, and hope, the future of this partnership will bring:
- Global Hub for Tech Talent: Glasgow will become a magnet for talent and investment, attracting leading tech minds and fostering groundbreaking research and development. This will create a critical mass of expertise, propelling the UK to the forefront of the global smart technology race.
- Research and Testing Hub for the Nation: Glasgow’s streets will transform into a living laboratory where smart city solutions can be piloted and perfected before being scaled up across the UK. This will accelerate the adoption of these technologies, improving the lives of citizens in towns and cities nationwide.
- Booming Ecosystem: The success of thebeyond will inspire similar initiatives in other parts of the UK, creating a network of interconnected hubs booming with innovation.
This will foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the cross-pollination of ideas, further enriching the UK’s tech landscape.
A Catalyst for Change:
This sophisticated partnership is not just about gears and gadgets; it’s about reimagining how we live, work, and interact with our world. It’s about harnessing the power of technology to create a more efficient, sustainable, and ultimately, more human-centric future. This collaborative spirit and shared vision for a brighter tomorrow, is what truly sets this initiative apart.
The journey has just begun, but the excitement is unexplainable. The UK tech world is on the cusp of a transformative era, and Glasgow is poised to lead the way. With the combined forces of government, city council, and a passionate tech community, the UK is setting itself up for a revolution, and the rest of the world is watching with eager anticipation.
We, at Pivot United Kingdom, have established ourselves in the UK market for over 10 years. Our parent company, Pivot International, knew the UK had a booming tech industry and was a great location to manage our global supply chain capabilities. Fast forward to today, where we have developed several award-winning electronic devices – many utilising our UK engineering and global supply chain teams. We are so excited for this initiative and what it means for the world.
So, buckle up, tech enthusiasts! The UK’s smart future is about to take off, and Glasgow is the runway from which it will soar.
